M.I.A’s New Material Sounding a Little Too Familiar

In I heard... on June 15, 2010 at 12:42 pm

There’s Lady Gaga…None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I do!”

Ouch! That was british-born rapper, M.I.A quoted in NME magazine slamming her label mate, Lady Gaga for ‘lack of originality’.

Now wait just a minute. I had a listen to M.I.A’s new track XXXO from her newly released album and would like to know if I’m wrong in saying it sounds reminiscent of a cross between Nelly Furtado and Britney Spears circa 2008?

We hear her veering away from her grammy-winning, signature rapping style and giving her singing voice a starring role with clean, poppy backing vocals in tow.

Messy Nessy Chic realizes that producing original music can be a tough feat, but could it be the case that M.I.A has been trying so hard to be original that she has wound up sounding exactly like everyone else?

Thoughts?
