Victoria Beckham is Designing Cars now?

In I heard... on July 8, 2010 at 1:51 pm

For someone who used to earn a living from prancing around in pop music videos and making pouty faces for the cameras (oh wait, she still does that), Victoria Beckham has just gone and nabbed herself a very impressive new job. Range Rover has just appointed her as their new creative design executive and her first assignment is? The new Range Rover Evoque. Yup, she’s designed the interior for the new shape that was revealed just this week at the company’s 40th anniversary party. At the party hosted by Vogue magazine, design director for Land Rover said of brand Beckham, “Victoria understands a lot about fashion, a lot about trends and a lot about luxury products.” So let me get this straight, owning a couple of range rovers and a collection of Hermes Birkin bags in every colour now qualifies you to design a car for one of the world’s most renowned automobile manufacturers? Okay, if you say so! Sounds more like a marketing dream to me though…

Realising that I appear to be belittling what the former Spice girl has achieved, I ask myself why that may be? After all, she has indeed run a successful fashion business for several years now, which is making waves in the industry and very much in demand by a number of respected celebrity clients. So why the sarcasm?  It may have something to do with the fact that we never get to see the image of Mrs. Beckham looking like she’s been slaving away all night in a design room, madly sketching her creations, sewing herself to the sewing machine. Always perfectly manicured, tip-toeing around in her six-inch heels, it brings the question to mind, how much involvement does this media mogul really have in creating her own product? Food for thought.

P.S. Let’s play my favourite game and spot the difference between the new Range Rover Evoque and the BMW X6. Slightly too similar looking, no?! (X6, Left; Range Rover, right)
