Who was the Original Lady Gaga? (Hint: It Wasn’t Madonna)

In I spied... on April 7, 2011 at 7:39 am

Female Dandyism isn’t just about donning a Pair of Brogues…

In her outfits made out of animal flesh, the gimp masks and alien egg-vessels (that thing she hatched from during her 2011 Grammy performance), you wouldn’t think to describe Lady Gaga as a dandy. But if you take a closer look, you’ll discover that much of Lady Gaga’s style is in fact based very closely upon one of the greatest female dandies that ever lived.

Meet the Marchesa Luisa Casati

(1881-1957)

A style inspiration

The Original Dandy

It’s hard to imagine anyone as extravagant as Lady Gaga existed before Madonna, let alone before the women’s female rights movement, but one such eccentric did exist in early 20th century Europe. At a time when the concept of dandy was expanding to include women, an Italian heiress, muse, and patroness of the arts, the Marchesa Luisa Casati emerged as the brightest celebrity style icon in European society. Before female dandyism was associated with the masculine look, it simply implied a beautifully dressed or over-dressed woman. Unbeknownst to many, the Marchesa is possibly the most artistically represented woman in history after the Virgin Mary and Cleopatra– her influence is all around us.

The Marchesa had a striking look with flaming red hair and unnaturally large green eyes. She would often dilate her pupils to accentuate this. Lady Gaga mimics the look in her "Bad Romance" music video..

Just as male dandies represent extravagance through aesthetics and considered themselves artists, Casati was the first to embody female dandyism when she announced: “I want to be a living work of art”.

In fact the Marchesa was so obsessed with her image that she made it one of her life’s ambitions to have herself painted, sculpted and photographed by hundreds of artists that she commissioned.

Beat this Lady Gaga …

Tall, elegant with flaming red hair and unnaturally large green eyes, Casati dressed and carried herself in a manner that was absolutely scandalous for her time. She fascinated the society contemporaries she surrounded herself with, such as Coco Chanel, Picasso, Marcel Proust, Cecil Beaton and Robert de Montisquiou. A turn of the century jet setter (before private jets), she was legendary for parading around with a pair of leashed cheetas and became the inspiration behind the illustrious panther motif for Cartier.

The Marchesa wore live snakes as jewellery and the Ritz Hotel in Paris even allowed her to check in with her two boa constrictors (along with the live rabbits she brought in to feed them). I’m not sure the same policy applies today after one of the deadly reptiles infamoulsy escaped.

The extravagance didn’t end there. Louisa had naked servants in gilded gold leaf to attend to her and guests inside the several palaces she collected with her immense wealth. Wax mannequins were strangely sat at the dining tables next to the international aristocracy attending her scandalous soirées and world-famous masquerade balls.

Every move she made was documented in gossip columns of the time and her ensembles were more outrageous than anything Lady Gaga has come up with yet.

Even though she was married, she had open affairs and continued to squander away her inheritance. The lifestyle, or the “spectacle”, came before everything (much like the Sapeurs of the Congo)– see here if you don’t know what I’m referring to).

When the Italian heiress had finally blown her $25 million fortune, Coco Chanel was among the bidders that attended the auction selling off everything Casati owned– from her residences in Versailles and Venice to her legendary wardrobe.

Luisa Casati lived off the charity of her daughter for the remaining years of her life, residing in London. The extravagant charade was over but she still kept her spirit until the very end. I’ve read that she is rumored to have been seen rummaging through bins in her old age looking for feathers to decorate her hair.

Her legacy remains…

With her unique, theatrical style, her masculine references, her fox furs and leopard skins, her neo-Gothic moods and oriental embroideries has and continues to inspire a legion of fashion designers…

Dior dedicated their 1998 Haute Couture collection to her 1920s style

CHANEL : Karl Lagerfeld held his resort 201o collection in Venice where the Marchesa spent much of her time, sending lookalikes of the style icon down the runway.

Yves Saint Laurent’s S/S 2004 collection embodied her masculine references, wild hair, dark makeup and preference for exotic animals..

The brand MARCHESA, red-carpet favourite with today’s celebrities, is indeed, named after the European style icon.

Ten of the Best Things about 2010

In I tried... on December 23, 2010 at 8:21 am

1. Making Fun of Hipsters

(Even though we all have something in common with that Youtube video)

‘Hipster’ became mainstream in 2010… whether you liked it or not.

And then one day… someone wrote a song about it..

And suddenly, the fear of looking too hipster when getting dressed in the morning became very real...

In case you’ve been living on planet Mars for the last six months, behold the infamous Youtube tribute to hipster fashion.

2. Blake Lively vs. Leighton Meester

(The Year of the Gossip Girls)

Who’s better looking? That might just be one of the trickiest questions of 2010. But without a doubt, these two breakout Gossip Girl actresses transgressed into bonafied Hollywood starlets this year.

Having made more red carpet appearances and magazine covers in 2010 than we had square meals, both will reportedly front major fashion campaigns next year (Blake as the new face of Chanel and Leighton to model for Missoni).

Meester was a very busy lady, landing a heavy-duty supporting role in the anticipated drama, Country Strong, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and also tried her hand at a singing career earlier this year.

Having appeared on the cover of VOGUE twice at only 23 years of age, Blake Lively is being given a fast-track ticket to superstardom by a her very own fairy godmother, powerhouse editor Anna Wintour.

3. Androgynous Style

Brogues, aviator jackets, military boots and schoolboy chic; we couldn’t stop dressing like the boys in 2010..

Meanwhile the fashion industry experimented with androgynous and transgender supermodels

4. The Hipstamatic iPhone App

This wonderful little application which essentially makes a picture of dog poop look edgy and retro, made it difficult to take photographs in any other way this year…

The hipstamatic app spread like wild fire and soon appeared on Facebook albums and yup, you guessed it, on MessyNessyChic (I confess to being a bit of a dickhead hipster at times).

5. Lady Gaga’s Sunglasses

It really has been a pleasure eyeing up Gaga’s eyewear of 2010. The woman already gets enough attention for her meat dresses and record breaking music sales but one thing MessyNessy thinks has been overlooked is Lady Gaga’s incredible sunglasses collection. Gaga is a total genius when it comes to finding extraordinary eyewear that she manages to pull off every time.

6. Geeky Boys

Clockwise from top left: Glee's Matthew Morrison, Napster's inventor Sean Parker, Social Network actor Andrew Garfield and Mark Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg is TIME’s man of the year, The Social Network was the movie of our generation, Glee‘s “gleeks” are a television phenomenon; suddenly being Mr. Popular, the iron-bodied jock, that rebellious heartbreaker, is not what qualifies for sexy in 2010.

The objects of our affections are noticeably shifting towards the misfits, the brainiacs, the boys who own the future; the geeks!

So guys… less time in the gym and more time learning html code.

7. Street Style

2010 was the year that street style surpassed the catwalk as our go-t0 for fashion influence.

Celebrating individuality, focusing on style rather than designer labels, and saluting the fashion savoir-faire of the unknown passer-by, a new breed of fashion photographer has diverted attention from celebrity style and fashion week runways, which have monopolised fashion coverage for the best part of this decade.

Blogs such as The Sartorialist and Face Hunter are now mandatory reads for magazine editors and designers alike.

Street style is about how real girls put themselves together – as opposed to male designers deciding what women should look like.

8. The Rise of the Indie Female Rockers

Girls next door; talented songwriters with quirky voices took over our iPods one rocker at a time. Move over pop tarts.

9. Photoshop and Plastic Surgery Backlash

With increasing exposure on the extensive use of photoshop in media and more celebrities emerging with unnatural, stretched and cartoon-like features this year, we’re wising up to the fact that all those impossibly beautiful women we see in our magazines and on television, are just that– impossibly beautiful… without plastic surgery or extensive photoshopping that is.

Damn it.
